Frugal Tips
Homemade detergent recipes!
Let's get Frugal!Save TONS of money making these yourself! The quality is comparable to name brands and sooooooooo much cheaper!

Dishwashing detergent

Recipe 1:

1 box of baking soda (2 ½ cups)
2 ½ cups Borax 20 mule team
1 small package Kool-Aid brand lemonade (or store brand)

Mix together, or shake. Use 1T for each compartment.

Recipe 2:

1 box store brand (cheap) dishwashing detergent
1 box Arm and Hammer baking soda
2 packages Kool-Aid lemonade (or store brand)

Match the dishwashing detergent and baking soda in equal parts. I use 6 cups of each. Then add the Kool-Aid. Shake or mix well. 1-2 tablespoons in each compartment. This recipe is the one I use!

Fabric Softener

4 cups HOT water
2 cups baking soda
2 cups vinegar (apple or white)

Heat water in BIG bowl in microwave until bubbling. Add the baking soda. Stir well and let cool a bit, stirring every so often. Add the vinegar SLOWLY! This mixture will fizz and bubble so add SLOWLY so as not to spill over.

You can add essential oil for smell. I use lavender essential oil and about 20 drops in to counteract the vinegar smell.

Use an old liquid detergent bottle and with a funnel pour mixture in. Rinse with water any remaining baking soda left in bowl or funnel.

Only cap and shake when mixture has COOLED. Shake vigorously before each time you use this. Put amount in a downy ball, same amount you would normally use.

Laundry Detergent

Recipe 1:

3 pints water
1/3 bar grated Fels Naptha soap
½ cup Arm and Hammer washing soda (this is NOT baking soda)
½ cup 20 mule team Borax
2 gallon bucket with lid
1 quart hot water

Mix grated soap with 3 pints hot water in saucepan on stove, on low or warm. Stir in washing soda and borax, stir until thick and remove from heat. Add 1 quart hot water to bucket, add soap mixture and mix well. Fill bucket with hot water and mix. Set for 24 hours. Use ½ cup mixture per full load.

Recipe 2:

1 cup grated Fels Naptha Soap
½ cup washing soda
½ cup 20 mule team borax
2 tablespoons glycerin
2 cups water

Mix first three ingredients together, and then add glycerin and water. Use ½ -3/4 cup per full load.

Recipe 3: (This is the one I use!)

5 gallon bucket with lid
I bar fels Naptha soap, grated
1 cup washing soda
1 cup borax 20 mule team

Dissolve grated soap in water in saucepan on stove. Low or warm until dissolved.
Fill bucket with HOT water (I use the bathtub), and add the dissolved soap mixture. Add the washing soda and the borax and mix well. As it cools it will thicken, just stir occasionally to break up and mix well. This can be used immediately. Use 1-2 cups per load.

Recipe 4: Powdered detergent

1 cup grated Fels Naptha soap
½ cup washing soda
½ cup Borax

Mix and store in airtight container. For light loads use 1 tablespoon, for heavy loads use 2 tablespoons.

** The Fels Naptha soap can be found in most grocery stores. It is usually carried in the detergent section. Comes in bars.

** Any soap can be used. I have had the most success with Fels Naptha and Dial.

** The Arm and Hammer washing soda is NOT the baking soda. This washing soda is also found in the detergent section of most grocery stores. In a yellow box.

** The washing soda does not HAVE to be used if using Borax, but it does help. It boosts the cleaning power.

** For the liquid laundry detergent, this will set into a liquidy gel type substance. Stir before every wash to evenly disperse mixture.

** The liquid laundry detergent will not produce suds. Don’t think it’s not working! This type of soap, the Fels Naptha, does not need suds to work.

** The powder laundry detergent is perfect for front loading washing machines.

Feel free to experiment with your own creations. These are super easy recipes that will save you so much money!
